Message From the Head of Junior School: April 1, 2016

Dear Parents,

In my message to you on December 4th, I shared an important parent letter that I received which addressed student safety at drop off and pick up. In that message, I asked parents to:

• Always drive cautiously keeping in mind that children can be unpredictable, and sometimes dart in between cars and greenery.
• Keep control of your children, walk on the sidewalk, hold hands, and guide them safely to avoid traffic.

Expanding on this, I'd like to remind you that parents are encouraged to drop their daughter(s) off at the curbside area marked "No Parking", directly in front of the main entry doors. We ask that you remain in your car as she makes her way to the front doors. Do not leave your car unattended in this lane at any time. If you wish to escort your daughter into the building, we ask that you park your car on the West Junior School parking lot. The drop-off area is designated for those who require a quick morning drop-off, and to allow parents/caregivers the security of seeing students walk safely into the building before moving on so that others can follow suit. This is especially important during inclement weather, such as rainy days so that students can enter the building as safely and quickly as possible while keeping dry. I cannot stress enough how much we need your help to make this work for all of us.

JS Pi DAY - A GREAT SUCCESS!

On the Friday before March Break, the students in grades 1-6, along with all of their teachers, spent an exciting afternoon celebrating the first ever Junior School Pi Day. The afternoon started with all of the staff and students dressing up in mathematical themed costumes. There were calculators, various equations, 'pi' rates, a ruler and even a few Einsteins! Afterwards some grade 5 students ran a very informative assembly where we learned all about the history of Pi, why it is celebrated on March 14, and enjoy demonstrations to understand where 3.14 really comes from. Seven students in the junior division challenged themselves by memorizing more than 50 digits of Pi to share with us. Very impressive! We also learned that Pi Day is important because it is the birthday of one of the most influential physicists of the 20th century - Albert Einstein. Einstein taught us about perseverance and hard work and that mistakes are important because a person who never makes mistakes is a person who never tries anything new. With that knowledge, the students went back to their classrooms to apply their problem-solving skills and perseverance in escape-room inspired mathematical and logical challenges. It was a fun-filled afternoon and a fabulous way to end the winter term.

 

NEW CIRCLES - SPRING CLOTHING DRIVE
Thanks to your generous donations of clothing/footwear and more this past autumn, our community partner New Circles was able to provide and support many families new to our cold Canadian climate with the necessities that they sorely needed. The success of this autumn campaign has spurned our students to launch a spring/summer collection. If you have gently used spring clothing, jackets, footwear, hats, etc. that you wish to donate, collection bins will be located outside our Learning Hub from April 4 - May 4.


A MESSAGE FROM ERICA RODD - JS LIBRARIAN
The book drive for the Children's Book Bank was a great success! Before our March Break,  Ms. Campbell and I dropped off over 15 boxes to the Children's Book Bank - that's over 1,500 books! These books will become part of the Book Bank storefront, where children in low income communities will be able to browse, and take home a book for free to keep forever. Thank you for all your support and for being so considerate and thoughtful with your book donations!

Dear Parents,

March Break is finally here and not a minute too soon! We've had a relatively mild winter, but I do believe that most of us are ready to enjoy some time off. I know many of you are heading to sunny climates, and some of you to spend time up north, while others will remain local and will have a 'stay-cation' in Toronto. No matter where you are going, or what you are doing, on behalf of all the JS faculty and staff - I wish you a wonderful, restful, happy March Break.

A MESSAGE FROM SEONAID DAVIS, DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM & FACULTY DEVELOPMENT
On Thursday, April 7, Dr. Leonard Sax will be speaking at the York School between 7:00-9:00 pm. Dr. Sax is a renowned clinician and author of four books for parents, including recent New York Times bestseller, The Collapse of Parenting. JS ATHLETICS - A MESSAGE FROM ANNIE MAKI, JS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
As you may know, Havergal College is a proud member of the Conference of Independent Schools' Athletic Association (CISAA). The CISAA provides development opportunities for coaches, parents and student athletes. This year the CISAA and a partner organization, the Positive Coaching Alliance are offering a workshop during the first week of April and you are invited. The workshop takes place at Upper Canada College, in the George Weston Hall on Tuesday, April 5 from 7:00-8:15 pm.

"The Second-Goal Parent: Developing Winners in Life Through Sports" is a 75 minute interactive workshop exploring the role of a second-goal parent, who supports their child so that he/she enjoys a positive experience in sports.

Topics discussed will include:

• How parents can help ensure that their child experiences a healthy, developmental (physical/social/mental) outcome that will serve them far beyond the playing field.
• Guidelines for developing a positive coach/parent relationship.
• Understanding the three research-based stages of talent development.
• Engaging children in constructive, meaningful conversations.
• Insight into the training of coaches and what it means to be a double-goal coach.

Message From the Head Of Junior School: March, 4, 2016

Dear Parents,

The safe dismissal and/or pick up of our JS students is a priority at the Junior School, and can be challenging due to many factors, such as congestion and weather. The dismissal process involves numerous faculty members both inside and outside the building, dedicated to getting girls dressed in their winter gear, personal items packed up and ready to go. We are extremely fortunate to have Manny, our school crossing guard here daily coordinating vehicular and pedestrian traffic with safety as his main priority.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE: STUDENTS LEAVING HC CAMPUS TO WALK HOME ALONE: Thank you to those parents who have already sent us written authority granting your daughter(s) permission to leave our property and walk home by themselves. It is imperative that if you want your daughter to leave the HC campus and walk home by herself on a regular basis, we must have written permission as soon as possible.

Understandably, on occasion there are special circumstances, whereby you may not be able to collect your daughter and on short notice you would like for her to walk home. In these 'one-of' situations, your daughter is required to sign-out in the main office before leaving campus. I ask that you discuss this precaution with her and remind her of the importance of this extra security step. We will address this in morning Prayers as well.

As you will see in the 'Dates You Need To Know' section below, we have moved the March Pizza Lunch date from Monday, March 7 to Friday March 11 to coincide with 'JS Pi Day' (more information below). You may recall seeing an auction item at Celebration Saturday where some lucky girls purchased the opportunity to throw a pie at a JS teacher. Eight girls will limber up, get their pitching arm ready and give it their all as they toss a pie at a teacher after the JS Pizza Lunch on Friday, March 11. Please remember to send a lunch to school on Monday, March 7 or order from Rose Reisman Catering.


JS PI (PIE) DAY - Non-Uniform (grub) Dress
The first known Pi Day was organized in 1988 by a physicist named Larry Shaw. To celebrate, participants spent the day marching around in circles while eating pie! In 2009, March 14 was officially recognized as National Pi Day. This particular date was chosen because it is the 14th day of the 3rd month - or 3.14. Since then, every year on March 14, people around the world celebrate Pi, the most useful of all irrational numbers.

This year, on the afternoon of Friday, March 11, the Junior School will celebrate our first ever Pi Day. The faculty, staff and students are invited to dress up as anything mathematical, ie: favourite mathematician, shape, number, etc., or mathematical concept that they can conceive.

The afternoon will begin with a pizza lunch followed by a pie toss. The eight girls who successfully bid on the Celebration Saturday auction item will toss a cream pie at a JS teacher after our pizza lunch. Afterwards the girls in grades 1-6 will apply their problem-solving & perseverance skills to work in escape-room inspired mathematical/logical brain challenges. Parents are invited to participate in challenges of their own in the JS gymnasium. We are looking forward to fun-filled mathematical day!


PRIMARY & JUNIOR CHOIRS - A MESSAGE FROM MR. MacLEAN
Last week our Primary Choir participated in the Kiwanis Festival. The girls sang beautifully, and I'm proud to say that we walked away with 1st place! We came in 3rd place overall out of nine primary choirs that competed throughout the week. The top two choirs were made up of only grade 3 students, so we are especially proud of our efforts, Thank you to the parents and faculty who came out to support us.

JS ATHLETICS - A MESSAGE FROM ANNIE MAKI, JS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
We have had a lot of fun these last two week watching our winter athletes playing and swimming in their championship games/meets. Look for details and pictures in next week's issue of Gator Zone. Congratulations to the U11 Swim Team members for taking first place, and to the U12/D1 Volleyball Team for winning the league championship. We are so proud of all our athletes!

We celebrate our fall and winter athletes on Wednesday, March 9 at an 'Athletes Breakfast'. This breakfast is meant for girls who played on CISAA league teams only, and does not include squad team participants. Parents, please drop your daughter off at the Upper School at 7:15 am, as we will meet in the Hawkin's Dining Hall. Alternatively, athletic coaches will be on hand at 7:10 am in the JS to walk girls over to the Upper School.

Our Volleyball Squad Team show off their skills this coming Monday when they play an intra-squad game in the big gym at the Upper School. Coaches Bernice Wu and Sarah Szolopiak can't wait to see the girls play another game!

The spring season is almost here and with it, JS spring teams: Grade 5/6 Softball (combined) and Grade 4-6 Track & Field. If you are travelling to warmer climates over the March Break, our spring athletes request that you bring home some sunshine and warm weather because they are anxious to get outdoors and practice hard!

Online registration for both spring teams is now open. The link is available to you on both your parent portal and on your daughter's Veracross home page. Softball tryouts and Track & Field practices begin the week of Monday, April 4. Schedules will be available shortly.

MARCH BREAK & LOST AND FOUND ARTICLES
We dismiss for March Break on Friday, March 11 at 3:30 pm, as usual our Gator Care program is available until 6:00 pm. We return on Tuesday, March 29. While we are all enjoying time away, there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes, and part of that is 'spring cleaning'. We need your help, Thursday, March 10 is locker/cubby clean out day, please send your daughter to school with a bag so that she can bring items home. Thanks to Ms. Lulu, our day matron all lost and found items will be put on display in the foyer in time for afternoon pick-up. Please encourage your daughter to search through these treasures to find anything she might be missing. Parents are welcome to look as well.


MABEL'S FABLES IS COMING BACK!
During the week of March 7-11, the Learning Hub will be hosting the Mabel's Fables Book Fair. This is always an exciting time in the Junior School as they bring an excellent array of high quality children's literature to choose from - and just in time for March Break!

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the fair will be set up for browsing. Students will have scheduled times to  browse and fill out wish lists to bring home. On Thursday and Friday a Mabel's Fables staff member will be here to collect payments. Students will again have a scheduled time to make purchases. Parents are welcome anytime to browse and purchase.

The Learning Hub directly benefits from the fair, as we receive a portion of the sales that goes toward new books for our collection. Mabel's Fables will accept Visa, MasterCard, cash or a cheque made payable to Mabel's Fables. Message From the Head of Junior School: February 26, 2016

Dear Parents,

 

I am struggling to find words to express how wonderful this past week has been, especially yesterday. The parent presence in, and support for the Junior School has been absolutely tremendous. Even though Mother Nature threw everything she had at us, with bouts of rain, snow, sleet, wind, and slippery ice, attendance at yesterday's first ever Parent Conference surpassed our high expectations. The school was alive all day long and into the afternoon and evening as you joined us for Parent/Teacher Interviews. Thank you for coming to meet with the 'front line' - your daughter's educators.

Which brings me to our first JS Great Bake Sale! How can I even express how AWESOME our Great Bake Sale was? We are in the process of tallying up the actual dollar figure that will finance the purchase of an item for our Robotics Program in the Junior School, but I can assure you - it will be a very high dollar amount! The donations from vendors and the home baked items were astounding, not only in the enormous volume that we received, but in the gourmet quality of goods and professional presentation. The mouth watering display of goods was hard to resist and hugely enjoyed by all. I can honestly say that we are humbled by the generosity of all our parents who whole heartedly supported this JS Great Bake Sale, from the organizers and volunteers to those who stood in line to make their purchases and take home their treats.

JSMNO - A MESSAGE FROM LAURIE MELBOURNE & NICOLE POLYGENIS

A heartfelt thank you to all the moms who came out last week to support the JSMNO 2016 get-together. Terroni's will never be the same! So many fantastic women celebrating such an incredible school community. There are a lot of people who deserve mentioning:

• Thank you to Terroni's for the never-ending food and the free flowing refreshments.
• Thanks also to our four vendor teams - Jaxx & Marbles Belts, Merben International, Canopy Blue and Touch of Gem - they were a fabulous addition to the evening.
• Final thanks must go to Take My Photo, photo-booth. The grade photos were an excellent touch and a terrific memento of our evening together.

Nights like JSMNO are always worth attending and well worth the time and effort put into the planning process. Thanks for having fun with us!

JS Winter Teams:
Congratulations to the Swim Team for bringing their best efforts to the pool on Wednesday for their season championship meet. We are proud of all our swimmers and extend special congratulations to the U11 team members who won their division! Thank you to coaches Andy Lucacescu and Laura Campbell for their dedication and passion and all the many hours they have spent with this special team. Good luck to all three of our Volleyball Teams this weekend as they play in their final championship games.

Online Registration - JS Spring Teams:
We are pleased to announce that the JS will continue online registration for the spring season. Thank you to parents and students for providing valuable feedback from the winter sign-up. The spring athletics sign-up link will be available on both your parent portal and your daughter's Veracross home page. Registration will open on Monday, February 29. I will send all parents of girls in grades 4-6 an email with additional details on Monday regarding the online registration process.

They need working locks and other lockable items (with codes), such as multi-digit locks, word locks, lockable briefcases, portable safes, door locks, etc. We are hoping to have this collection ready by Friday, March 4. Feel free to drop off any items you can spare in front of room 210 (Science Room), on the second floor or the main office. If you would like your item returned, please flag it with a note with your name and contact details. Stay tuned for more information on this fun and exciting project.


HCPA VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

This week the Havergal College Parent Association (HCPA) sent out a list of open volunteer chair positions for the 2016-17 school year. Any member of the Havergal College community can nominate themselves or a friend. The HCPA plays a role in convening grade reps and volunteers as well as planning a number of activities such as Celebration Saturday, the Parent Luncheon, Used Textbooks Sale, and other special events. It is a great way for parent volunteers to be involved at the school. You will receive an email from your Grade Reps outlining the positions and how to submit names. MABEL'S FABLES IS COMING BACK!
During the week of March 7-11, the Learning Hub will be hosting the Mabel's Fables Book Fair. This is always an exciting time in the Junior School as they bring an excellent array of high quality children's literature to choose from - and just in time for March Break!

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the fair will be set up for browsing. Students will have scheduled times to  browse and fill out wish lists to bring home. On Thursday and Friday a Mabel's Fables staff member will be here to collect payments. Students will again have a scheduled time to make purchases. Parents are welcome anytime to browse and purchase.

The Learning Hub directly benefits from the fair, as we receive a portion of the sales that goes toward new books for our collection. Mabel's Fables will accept Visa, MasterCard, cash or a cheque made payable to Mabel's Fables. The purpose was to provide an overview of how the students progress from the Junior School to the Upper School. The information shared was extremely valuable and would be of great interest to all JS families. PINK SHIRT DAY
Students in Grades JK-12 are invited to wear a pink shirt on top of their uniform on Wednesday, February 24, in recognition of national "Pink Shirt Day". This is a day where students across the country unite in the name of kindness, and stand up against bullying. Prayers on Monday, February 22 will focus on the purpose of this day, providing students with a deeper understanding of how this day came about, and what we can do individually and as a group to build a strong community where the HC values of Integrity, Inquiry, Compassion and Courage thrive.

Thursday, February 25 will be a super sweet day in the Junior School!
Students - Bring a toonie to school and join your classmates at the 'Student Treat Table'. All items on this table will have been made in, or purchased/donated from a nut-free facility. Also available will be treats for those with other allergy sensitivities such as dairy and eggs.
Parents - After school and throughout the Parent/Teacher Conferences, you are invited to purchase home-made baked goods that have been lovingly made by JS families. Please note, that while none of these treats will have any peanuts or tree-nuts directly in them, they cannot be considered 'nut-free' as they have not be made in a nut-free facility.

The Bake Sale will be open to parents at 3:00 pm, payment may be made by cash or charged to student accounts.

Message From the Head of Junior School: February 12, 2016

Dear Parents,

In the 2006-2007 school year, our theme was, "The Year of the Story". Our Grade 1 students at that time felt that the Thomas King quote, "The truth about stories is that's all we are" was a good starting point for a study unit. From that point on, their teachers asked HC parents if they would like to share their story. Each week they would regale us with extraordinary and amazing narratives that the students in the Upper School still remember to this day.

During Prayers this year, we have been talking about life's journeys and people's stories. As the girls of 2006-2007 are now close to graduating, we thought that our current student body would benefit greatly from hearing some of the parent stories shared a decade ago. We invited some of these parents back to the Junior School to retell their stories. We are so delighted that Mrs. Anh Truong, mother of Old Girl, Bernice Chan and current student Renee Chan, has kindly agreed to share hers. She will talk about her life in Vietnam and the journey that brought her to Toronto. Hers is story that is particularly pertinent in light of current world events. Please join us on Tuesday, February 16 at 8:25 am for our "Year of the Story" P4C in the JS gym.

SIT UPDATE
The Student Institute Team (SIT), continues to meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for girls interested in learning about the world and making a difference. This past Tuesday, grade 3 students Suri, Selena, and Shirley researched and created an action plan to help endangered leatherback sea turtles. Junior SIT members, Annabel and Carina are using their skills in computer coding to create an interactive game to teach children about the effects of global climate change. We are looking forward to seeing the results of all the students' hard work over the coming months!

The Children's Book Bank is a charitable organization whose mission is to provide children's books and literacy support to children living in high needs Toronto communities. Message From the Head of Junior School: February 5, 2016

Dear Parents,

As part of Havergal's Master Planning, we have engaged Spectrum Traffic Data to review and analyze traffic flow and volume at the Junior School. You may have already seen work crews this week on our campus, please note that their study and presence continues until February 10 (at various times/locations).

Part of their study requires video footage of traffic volume/patterns at our school driveways during pick up and drop off. Next week they will install cameras on tripods at a height of approximately 20 feet at these locations. Please be assured that these cameras cannot identify vehicle licence plates or faces and there will not be any disruption to school activities or routines.
