Message from Head of Junior School - September 22, 2017

Dear JS Parents,

On Monday, our Grade 6 students received House Pins at payers. These pins represent the students' first "official" and formal role as leaders in our school. Garth Nichols, VP Student Engagement, and Experiential Development delivered a message about what it means to be a leader. Specifically, he raised our awareness that there are many forms of leadership, beyond formal.  In fact, he described five domains of leadership.

  • Formal Leadership
    • E.g., Elected Roles, Prefects, Club Heads, Team Captains, Heads of Houses.
  • Informal leadership
    • E.g., Seeing something that needs to be done at school, and doing it without being asked - picking up litter around the playground.
  • Intellectual leadership
    • E.g., Taking on academic challenges set by teachers, or independently researching personal areas of interest.
  • Leadership of the self
    • E.g., Setting academic and/or social goals for yourself, making a plan, and following through.
  • Leadership in the community
    • E.g., Considering the perspectives of others, and taking action to enrich the lives of those around you.

Mr. Nichols challenged us to think about each of these, as well as how we could develop our own leadership capacities both in and outside of school.  Finally, he asked us to consider the following question:  "Who do you want to be, when noone is looking?"  As we start the weekend and join together for Celebration Saturday, I encourage you to initiate a discussion with your daughter about the five domains of leadership, and "who she wants to be, when noone is looking."

Lastly, for all of our families celebrating Rosh Hashana, we wish you a Shana Tova!

Warmly,
Kate White

Please Note:

The NEW JS PLAY STRUCTURE IS READY!
We are thrilled to inform you that construction of the new JS play structure has been completed!  Students will be able to start using it as of Monday!  This also means that our outdoor playspaces will once again be extended to include all areas of the hill.

EVACUATION DRILLS
JS Students, Faculty and Staff practiced the first of six evacuation drills this morning. Previously, we gathered on The Cohen Field, in the event of an evacuation. As this is an area that is no longer accessible, our new gathering spot is the Upper School, Lower Parking Lot.  The purpose of today's drill was to familiarize the students with the new location and to calmly walk them through what to do in the event we needed to leave the building safely and quickly.  Another drill has been scheduled for next week so that we can continue to practice these procedures.

HARVEST FESTIVAL
HARVEST FESTIVAL - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6 AT 8:30 a.m.

The Junior School annual Harvest Festival takes place on Friday, October 6 at 8:30 in the Brenda Robson Hall (Upper School). Parents, family members, and guests are invited to a coffee reception in the Temerty Commons immediately following the service.

As part of our community partnerships, teachers and students are asked to make an offering of non-perishable food items for the North York Harvest Food Bank Collection. As is the tradition, these offerings are placed in decorated baskets and walked to the Upper School by the JS students. Students in Grades 1-6 are asked to decorate at home a basket (eg: a simple recyclable cardboard fruit/veggie basket that can be found at the grocery store), place their offerings in it and bring it to school by Thursday, October 5. Students in JK and SK will decorate a basket together in class at school. Kindergarten students are asked to bring in their non-perishable food items.

This formal service is an ideal and heart-warming start to the Thanksgiving break and a wonderful way for our community to gather and celebrate all that we have to be thankful for. We hope to welcome you and all your family members!

Students are asked to adhere to the following "#1 Concert Dress" consisting of:

Grade JK, SK, 1, 2, 3: long sleeve white shirt, tunic, HC tie, green tights & black shoes

Grade 4: long sleeve white shirt, tunic, HC tie, green tights & black shoes
Grade 5 & 6: long sleeve white shirt, kilt, HC tie, green tights & black shoes

·    Special attention to hair - it should be pinned back from the face using a hair accessory without colour, sparkles or embellishments. Girls are permitted to wear small pins or a headband that matches their natural hair colour. Hair accessories in the Havergal colours, House colours, or any colour other than her natural hair colour is not permitted during the performance.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Morning & Afternoon Volunteers needed!
Junior School Moms & Dads,
Do you have 30 minutes to help out at drop off or pick up?  We need extra hands to open card doors and make sure the JS girls (especially our little SK and JK girls) are getting out from their cars so parents don't have to park in the driveway and get out to open doors for the little ones.

Please click on the link below and sign up for a morning or afternoon 30 minute slot!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: NEW AND RETURNING PARENTS FOR THE HAVERGAL WELCOME COMMITTEE

The Welcome Committee is a group of Havergal Junior School parents who work with the Admission Office to give tours to prospective families.  Members of the Welcome Committee are also involved in admission events such as the Open House, Coffee and Conversation and our New Family Picnic. This is a great way to meet new people and share your love of Havergal with families who are going through the admission process. Being part of the Welcome Committee is a flexible role and we will work around your availability.
If you would like to be a part of the Welcome Committee, please sign up at the link below, and join us at our Welcome Committee orientation meeting on Monday, September 25th at 9:00 a.m. in the Learning Hub. (right after Prayers)

The Admission team truly values the involvement of our Welcome Committee.  We receive awesome feedback from our prospective families. They really appreciate feeling welcome in our school and love hearing your HC stories and experiences!
