Message from the Head of the Junior School - February 3, 2017

Dear Junior School Parents,

At this very difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with our Muslim friends, students and communities across Canada and the world following the mass shooting at a mosque in Quebec City’s Sainte-Foy neighbourhood on Sunday night.

This week, many of our students have come together to reflect upon recent events in order to have meaningful dialogue and shape a better tomorrow.

As a school, Havergal College is committed to a culture of inclusion, respect and compassion. With that in mind, our flags have been lowered to half-staff in memory of those who lost their lives in this tragedy.

Everything you need to know about SPIRIT WEEK!
Monday, January 6 - Friday, January 10
  • The goal of Spirit Week is to add some fun to the school year as we demonstrate our true HC spirit. Throughout the week, students, faculty and staff may dress a little differently and participate in fun activities at the school.
  • Monday:
    • Pyjama Day - students are invited to wear their pyjamas to school. Feel free to bring along your slippers, but please leave those stuffies at home!
    • Grade 1 Intramurals
    • It's Pizza Lunch! Students will be eating with their Haverpals.
  • Tuesday: 
    • Green and Gold Accessory Day - students are invited to wear green and gold headbands, necklaces, earrings, scarves, etc, on top of their regular HC uniform. Please note that students on the Junior School Hockey Squad, and students in Grade 6 may wear full green and gold.
    • Students from the Upper School are coming over to play outside between 8:00 and 8:45 a.m.
    • Grade 2 Intramurals
    • Grade 6s and the JS Hockey Squad Team go to see BSS vs. HC play in the Hewitt Cup.
  • Wednesday: 
    • Sport Team Day - students are invited to wear a t-shirt or jersey from their favourite team, over their HC uniform.
    • Grade Pillar Decorating Contest
    • Grade 3 Intramurals
    • Primary Dance Party in the Gym at Lunch recess.
  • Thursday:   
    • Crazy Hair or Hat Day - students come dressed in their HC uniform, but are invited to make their hair look as zany as they want....think mousse, hairspray, high ponies, multiple braids, and maybe even a little colour!  OR  Dust off that crazy hat, and wear it to school...think top hats, minions, emoji toques, maybe even something that lights up! 
    • Grade 4 Intramurals
    • Junior Dance Party in the Gym at Lunch recess.
  • Friday: 
    • House Colour Day - students are invited to come dressed head to toe in their house colour!  House T-shirts, scarves, hats, leggings, leg warmers,...this is the time to let your House spirit shine!
    • Grade 5 and 6 Intramurals
    • House Picnic lunch - students will be eating picnic style today in their house meeting rooms.  Please pack a lunch that does not require a microwave to heat it up. 
  • For photos and updates of the events at Spirit Week, like us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram Twitter and Snapchat (look up HavergalCollege). This year we will also be streaming our hockey game on Facebook Live! Tune in to watch the game.

Re-enrolment Deadline:
  • A reminder that re-enrolment is due on Monday, February 6.

Junior School Staff and Faculty appointments:
  • Karen Nielsen will be assuming the responsibilities of Assistant to the Head of Junior School effective today. As many of you know, Karen began her career at Havergal in the DSO and then moved to the Junior School in 2007. She has been at Havergal for 13 years. Karen is an asset to our Junior School team. She is professional, committed and very organized. I look forward to working with Karen in this new role.
  • Sarah Szolopiak will be assuming the interim role of Athletic Director in the Junior School, effective February 6, 2017. Along with this new responsibility Sarah will continue to teach HPE and swim to Grades 3 and 5. Sarah joined Havergal in 2015 and believes, “it is her responsibility to develop and deliver curriculum through rich experiences that nurture each girl’s self-confidence at every stage of their development.”  Sarah is an enthusiastic teacher, passionate about athletics and has extensive coaching and managing experience. 
  • Danica Divotto joins Havergal in the Junior School HPE Department, effective January 30 2017. Danica comes to us from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and is presently completing her Doctorate in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning, in collaboration with the Knowledge Media Design Institute. Her doctoral work is researching the relationship between digital technology and sports education. Danica is a swim coach for the Ryerson Team and has worked at the Toronto Pan Am and Para Pan Am Games as Volleyball and Wheelchair Presentation Floor Manager (Beach Volleyball and Wheelchair Basketball.)
  • Calen Cifani will join the Havergal community as the new administrative assistant in the Junior School office on Monday, January 6.  Calen has over six years experience in administrative roles and customer service, as well as working with children in after school-programs and camps.  She has been responsible for initiating and maintaining high standards in numerous companies across the GTA.  Ms. Cifani's hours are between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., while Ms. Nielsen's are between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. We welcome Ms. Cifani to the Junior School, and invite you to stop by and say hello! 

HCPA Used Uniform Sale
  • Collection Dates: Jan 23 - Feb 3 
  • Sale Date: March 2
  • Donated items may be dropped off in the bins outside of the JS Learning Hub. 
  • Please note that this is a collection of Havergal College uniform items only, and does not include footwear.  
  • The money raised will help fund many initiatives at our school. Thank you.
Our Bake Sale Needs you!
  • Please donate your time or donate delicious treats for our 2nd Annual Junior School Bake Sale on March 2nd. Last year’s bake sale was a resounding success, thanks to our parent volunteers who deliciously baked, creatively packaged, and enthusiastically sold these delectable delights!

HCPA Call for Nominations - March 10 Deadline
  • The Havergal College Parent Association will be sending out information on the nomination process and available positions on the HCPA.  Interested parents can nominate themselves or someone for any of the positions.  Information will be sent out through your grade reps, but if you have any questions, please contact Andrea Cohen, HCPA Vice-Chair, (andreamcohen@icloud.com)

Don't Miss Mom's Night Out! - April 20
  • Join all your mom friends for a fun evening of mixing and mingling on April 20th at the Uptown Loft on Yonge Street.  More details to follow closer to the date.  If you would like to volunteer, please contact Ruth Ley (john-ruth@rogers.com) and Nicole Polygenis (nicole.polygenis@physiohealth.ca).

Father/Daughter Amazing Race - April 23
