Dear Junior School Parents,
On Wednesday, Jan 25, Lynn Lyons, author of Anxious kids,
anxious parents, visited Havergal to speak to both parents and faculty.
Lynn’s message is that raising children can be challenging
and we want to protect our children from failure, anxiety and mistakes.
While we focus on getting rid of stress, worry and failure, rates of
depression and anxiety continue to grow. What we need to do is to accept
stress and learn to manage it. How we interpret anxiety and what we
believe about it makes a difference in how we handle it and how it affects us.
For example, if a child is feeling symptoms of anxiety in anticipation of an
assessment and is told that those feelings are helpful, the child will perform
better. Her approach suggests that we normalize the feelings of anxiety and
worry, recognize the symptoms, understand why they are there, deal with them
and move forward.
