Message from Head of Junior School - January 26, 2018

Dear JS Parents,

This year, as part of Celebration Saturday, a morning of menu planning, cooking and sharing lunch with me was auctioned off for students in the Junior School.  Yesterday, I had the pleasure of spending time with a Grade 6 student who had won the bid, along with one of her friends.

We carefully planned what we wanted to make, bought the ingredients, and went back to the school to get cooking before sharing in our feast.  What struck me most about this experience was not necessarily how much fun the girls were having, as this could have been predicted.  Instead, it was their capacity to engage in conversation, to articulate what they were thinking, to be polite, and to show gratitude for the experience. For me, this reinforced my belief that a strong academic foundation is only part of what we want for our students. We also want for them to have the confidence and self-knowledge to carry themselves in any situation.  Seeing this in action yesterday was a joy to see.

Warmly,
Kate White

Grades 1 to 6 must bring their own lunches, snacks, water bottles and winter clothing
Rose Reisman Catering will not be providing lunches on this day for Grades 1-6.
Kindergarten will receive their Rose Reiseman lunches.
Please ensure to send your daughters to school in their physical education uniform with appropriate winter clothing and footwear for their Day 9 activities.
·       Kindergarten: Students will be traveling to Casa Loma to tour the castle and to participate in the Lady Pellatt's Lost Jewels tour. They will have an opportunity to tour secret passages and rooms to help find the missing jewels.
·     Grades 1, 2: Students in Grades 1 & 2 will continue to explore High Park, noting changes throughout the seasons and engaging in hands on forest exploration.
·       Grade 3:  For their third Day 9, students will make their way to Black Creek Pioneer Village. While there, students will participate in hand on workshops and tour the buildings to experience life as a pioneer. They will have an opportunity to work in an authentic heritage log house experiencing activities such as: cooking on a wooden stove, churning butter, weaving on a loom and exploring wood working tools.
·     Grade 4:  The Grade 4 girls will be visiting The Bob Rumball Centre for the Deaf and The Canadian National Institute for the Blind. This is aligned with their Science unit on Sight and Sound. The purpose of the trip is to help them understand how vital the eye and the ear are and how they work.

·       Grades 5 and 6: Students were given the opportunity to suggest excursions and co-construct experiences for our next day 9. Modeled after the Upper School Day 9, students are encouraged to learn a new skill or try something for the very first time. The final choices that were made available for students are Chocolate Making Workshop, Elite Basketball Camp Day Camp Program, Bollywood Dance Class with  Sanskriti Arts, Havergal Hackathon with our US faculty and IT department and Design Your Dream Playground facilitated by Grade 12 students, Kiara Cheng. Students submitted their top three choices in December and will be notified on Monday, January 29th as to which of their top three excursions they will be participating in. Students who did not submit their form were placed into one of these five amazing experiences.

MELLOW MONDAYS
Mondays 12:25-12:50 pm
Art Room
  • During prayers, girls were asked: “Do you sometimes feel a little stressed? Do you sometimes feel frazzled, like you want to melt into the ground?  Do you feel like you need to take a break every once in a while throughout the school day?”
  • Girls in grades 4-6, who feel a need for a few moments of silence and calm in their day, are invited to join Ms. Mastri and Rev. Douglas during lunch recess every Monday. Mellow Monday is a time reserved for girls who seek a peaceful environment, a quiet space to recharge and calm their body and minds. It is a non-judgmental environment and a safe and quiet space to hone their well-being, calm their minds and take a breather from the day.
  • There is no need to sign up for Mellow Monday. It is about dropping in when one feels the need, however, we encourage girls to develop this habit of finding time to calm their minds throughout the day.  Please take a moment to discuss this opportunity with your daughter. If she feels that this would benefit her, she is welcome to bring a small mat or towel to lie on, or a small journal and a pencil or fine liner to sketch or write with. We will begin promptly at 12:25 with a grounding activity, therefore, once the door is closed, there is no in and out privileges so it is important that your daughter comes prepared to simply defuse without concern.

HC SUMMER CAMP (GRADES 4 - 6)
Summer 2018
  • Junior School students in grades 4-6 are invited to register for an exciting summer camp program at Havergal College. Each year, Athletes in Motion (AIM) sports camp and Band at Camp Havergal (BACH) music camp invite students from our partner public schools Grenoble and Gateway Public School for a week of FUNdamental sport and movement skills and/or musical instruction in clarinet, trumpet, percussion, saxophone, trombone, and baritone. AIM and BACH Camps run in August and are supported by Havergal Senior School volunteers, the Forum for Change and the Director of Performing Arts.
