Message from Head of the Junior School - February 24, 2017

Dear JS Parents,

I wish you all a wonderful weekend with your families, and invite you to read this week's blog so that you are up to date with the many wonderful events occurring over the next several weeks.

Warmly,
Leslie Anne

Please Note:

Clubs - Spring Forms sent home today
Return to JS Office by March 3
  • As a reminder, girls in the Junior School are invited to join ONE club, and ONE Squad, Squad Team, and ONE competitive per term. Girls will also be able to continue to participate in Choir, Zodiactors, Math Club, and Chess.
  • One of the strands of our Strategic Plan (Our Vision is Limitless: Havergal 2020) is “Adjusting the Sails.”  This strand embraces change, promotes well-being, and provides support for every girl at the school.
  • Mindful of the need for balance, we want to support our girls in making choices in all areas of school life.  After careful consideration, the school believes that this decision will better enable our students to maintain balance and learn to make choices.

Havergal's Safety Arrival Process
  • Your children’s safe arrival to school each day is something that we take very seriously. We ask for your help in ensuring that the process is efficient and safe.
  • Using the Ministry of Education, Policy/Program Memorandum 123, para. 1, we have reviewed our arrival process, and would like to share the procedures which will be followed by the Junior School.
  • We ask the following of you:
    1. If your daughter(s) is absent or late for any reason, the parent(s)/guardian(s) must contact the Junior School immediately and report the reason for the absence. Please call: (416) 483-3843 ext. 6510 or email: jsoffice@havergal.on.ca
    2. If the school is not informed about the absence, the school will make attempts to contact the parent(s)/guardian(s) through phone and/or email.
    3. If we are unable to connect with the parent(s)/guardian(s) to determine the reason for the absence, the case will be escalated to the Head of the Junior School.
    4. The Head will decide whether to take further action.
  • Please verify all contact information in Veracross is up to date and correct.
    • Include any/all those who should be contacted in case of an unexplained absence (grandparents, aunts, uncles, nannies, etc).
    • Also verify that your work / office contact information is up to date.

CNML Math Contest – Grade 6s Challenge Themselves!
  • A group of grade 6 students have chosen to challenge themselves by writing the CNML mathematics contest on the morning of Tuesday, February 28th.
  • This contest is written by over one million students from the United States and Canada each year.
  • The goal for participating in contests is to encourage student interest and confidence in mathematics through solving rich, challenging problems.
  • Students in Grades 4 and 5 students will also have the opportunity to participate in the CNML contest in April.

Calling All Bakers!
  • A huge thank you to all of you that have volunteered to bake for this year's HCPA Bake Sale!
  • Please drop off your delicious treats between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Thursday March 2nd. in the Junior School Dining Room.
  • As much as possible, please bring your goodies packaged to sell!  For example, you may want to group your cupcakes by the half dozen, or your brownies by the dozen, all wrapped up in clear plastic cellophane, rather in Tupperware containers that need to be returned!
  • We will have limited supplies to wrap goodies at school, should this be more convenient.

Kids' Toonie Table - Thursday March 2nd.

  • A reminder that each student will have the opportunity to visit the "Kids' Toonie Table" at the bakesale.
  • Please send your daughter with a toonie, so she can purchase a treat to enjoy during the day.
  • All treats available at the "Kids' Toonie Table" meet the criteria for Havergal's Allergy Aware Policy.

We need your old newspapers - by March 10

  • If you have any old newspapers lying around, please bring them to the JS office.  We need them for an upcoming project in House!  Thank you.

Message from the Head of the Junior School - February 17, 2017

Dear Junior School Parents,

A message of congratulations to Jeff MacLean, Leslie Hood and the Primary and Junior School choirs.

The Primary choir girls did an excellent job and sang their way to first place at the Kiwanis Festival! Out of the 9 primary choirs who entered this class over the span of 2 days, the girls ended up second overall, with a mark of 90. The comments were all very positive and the adjudicators thought their sound was pitch perfect!

Equally impressive is the Junior Choir,  who also came in first place. Out of the 11 Junior Choirs who entered the festival, the girls finished up first overall with a mark of 91, beating school choirs that have won national and provincial choral championships in the past!  It takes several years to develop a rich choral program and we have surely built a strong foundation through the girls’ commitment to choir every year and their focused practice.

Thank you to Mr. MacLean and Ms. Hood for preparing our girls so well, and for helping to bring out their very best.

Wishing you all a lovely Family Day long weekend!

Warmly,
Leslie Anne
