KINDERGARTEN CHRISTMAS CONCERT

Our Junior and Senior Kindergarten students are feeling the Christmas Cheer, and can’t wait to “shine” in their “Star” theme concert.  Families and friends of students of kindergarten students are invited to join us on Monday, December 19 at 2:00 pm in the JS Gym, for what is sure to be a fantastic start to the holiday season.

GRADE 1 – 6 CHRISTMAS CONCERT

It’s that time! Yes, the ‘official’ start to the holiday is taking place on Tuesday, December 20 as the girls in grade 1-6 will perform in their long-awaited, much-anticipated JS Christmas Carol Program – “We the North”. I look forward to seeing it with you at 6:30 pm in the Brenda Robson Hall at the Upper School. I’d like to offer the following important informational items to help you help us ensure a successful performance:

Tickets:

  • Parents are invited to pick up their two tickets for the concert at the JS office ASAP.  Parents can send their children to pick up their tickets if that is more convenient.
  • Anyone not planning on using their Christmas concert tickets, please email Karen Nielsen at knielsen@havergal.on.ca  by Thursday, December 15th.
  • We will contact all parents who requested extra tickets by Friday, December 16th to let them know if we are able to accommodate them.

Timing:
  • 5:45-Grade 6 Arrival;
  • 5:55 - Grade 5 Arrival;
  • 6:15 - Grade 1-4 Arrival; 6:05-6:30 Grade 5 & 6 Performing in EK,
  • Concert Timing:  6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Teachers will meet students in the rotunda and will escort your daughters to their appropriate waiting area while you secure a seat in the Brenda Robson Hall. Individual tickets have been issued for entry, please check in at the arrival table.

Attire:
  • Girls must wear “Concert Attire”, consisting of #1 dress uniform, with special attention to the following: (1) a long sleeve white shirt, and (2) hair should be pinned back from the face using a hair accessory such as a small pin, or a headband without colour, sparkles, or embellishments.

Exiting the Auditorium:
  • Please exit through the marked exits, specific instructions are outlined on the back page of the concert program.

Pick Up/Rendezvous:
  •  To avoid congestion at the conclusion of the concert, we ask that only one parent/adult collect students from the holding areas indicated on the back page of the concert program.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
  • There were 15 pedestrians struck recently in the span of 24 hours in the city of Toronto. As the days get darker sooner and the snow begins to fall, it is a good time to remind our girls to walk safely. Waiting at lights, and going to designated crossing sections are all  good and prudent practices.

UPCOMING CHANGES TO CLUBS  & ATHLETICS IN SPRING 2017

Starting in the spring term, girls in the Junior School will be invited to join ONE club, and ONE Squad, Squad Team or Team per term.  Girls will also be able to continue to participate in choir.

In the family handbook, it is explained that co-curricular activities are designed to meet the interests of every student, and that a wide range of clubs and activities enrich the Havergal program. They offer students a chance to develop a new interest or share a passion with others. Girls often enjoy the cross-grade interactions that are part of co-curricular clubs and activities as well as the unique interaction with faculty and staff who keenly support these student-focused activities.

One of the strands of our Strategic Plan (Our Vision is Limitless: Havergal 2020) is “Adjusting the Sails.”  This strand embraces change, promotes well-being, and provides support for every girl at the school.  Mindful of the need for balance, we want to support our girls in making choices in all areas of school life.  After careful consideration, with numerous stakeholders, the school believes that this decision will better enable our students to maintain balance.

*Please note that club forms for the period between January and March were sent home today. Children will still be able to sign up and attend multiple clubs during this time.  All forms are due back on Monday, December 12th.

CORRECTION:  Time of School Closure on December 21st
  • Please note that there was an error in the email version Inside Havergal. The school will close for the winter holiday on Wednesday, December 21 at 2:40 pm and will reopen for classes on Monday, January 9. We hope you have a wonderful break with your family and we apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

MUSIC - AN INVITATION TO ATTEND A PERFORMANCE
Our JS Music Educators invite parents to join us on Friday, December 9 from 8:25-9:00 am in the gym for a performance by Craig Cardiff, an Ontario-based folk singer/songwriter as he performs for our entire school community. He has worked with producers Ben Leggett (Faraway Neighbours, Ben Hermann) and Andre Wahl (Hawksley Workman, Luke Doucet). This is the team that produced Floods and Fires, the album that earned Cardiff a nomination for a 2012 Juno Award for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year: Solo and a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination as 2012 Contemporary Singer of the Year.

Craig Cardiff makes it a point to keep the relationship with his fans personal, inviting and accepting any opportunity to make his audience as much a part of the performance as he is. FACULTY ANNOUNCEMENT

In 1989 Valerie Rixon joined the Havergal Community teaching Grade 1, and since then she has forever enriched the lives of countless young girls on their journey through the Junior School. It is with a heavy heart that I announce she is leaving in January, 2017 to spend time with her family in England in her retirement.

Valerie is a consummate and professional educator with a resume too long, too dynamic and too full to list in detail here. Beyond her dedication to her students in the classroom, she has led numerous popular co-curricular activities focusing on the arts, academics and she even bravely tackled coaching Track and Field last year! One of the biggest legacies that she will leave behind is Philosophy For Children (P4C). This approach to learning encourages students to create philosophical questions to promote inquiry, dialogue and reflection. As the students have grasped this approach and expanded the depth of their learning, so have we all - her colleagues and dear friends.

We are so very grateful for her many contributions to Havergal College and thankful for the impact she will leave on all of us, most importantly - her students. We look forward to celebrating her distinguished career and accomplishments at a later date to be advised.

Please join me in congratulating her and wishing her well.

A Message From JS Head For A Day - Kate Taylor

Dear Junior School Parents,

Maybe you thought being a Head of a school is tedious because it's all about signing papers and attending meetings, but not at all. It's amazing! At the start of the day, I began by welcoming my fellow schoolmates from JK all the way up to Grade 6. It was a surprise for many students who didn't know I was going to Head of Junior School and many offered to be my assistant. Then I had a meeting with Mrs. Dexter and discussed my schedule for the day. I received a copy of the master key, and impressively, I did not lose it! Mrs. Dexter aslo shared with me that one of my important jobs for the day was to come up with a "Big Idea." The "Big Idea" was to be a surprise for all of the Junior School girls. It needed to be appealing to all of the students, including me, but also realistic. So, I went in some classroom visits in grades 1, 2, and 3 and they gave me some great suggestions. I was over-whelmed with ideas, but still hadn't found the perfect one.

After reading stories to the JK and SK classes, I had recess duty. I must admit that although I had planned to carefully supervise, I ended up just talking to my friends. Good thing Ms. Hickey and Ms. Bartlett were there to back me up. After recess, I had a meeting about portfolios with the Senior Leadershjp Team. It was nerve-racking as I didn't want to embarrass myself in front of our Principal, Ms. Davy, but everything went well and I shared my thinking about digital portfolios. Then, as soon as I saw the pizza-man come through the door, I knew it was lunchtime. It was during this lunch with Mrs. Dexter, Ms. Whiteley (Head of Food Services) and one of my friends, that I finalized my "Big Idea." I am excited to share that we will be decorating cookies during Haverpals in December!

After lunch I went on a tour of the "off-limits" section of the Upper School with Mrs. Massie, visited South House with Ms. Mirabelli, and then conducted some classroom visits with Dr. Simmonds. My busy day concluded with some snacks and down time in Mrs. Dexter's office and the chance to reflect on this day to remember.

JS Head For A Day - Kate Taylor, Grade 6C

REMEMBRANCE DAY IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL
The Junior School will recognize Remembrance Day on Monday, November 7 at 9:30 am. As always, we encourage all family members to join us at this special service. Please note that the Junior School Grandpals' Day will take place on Friday, May 12 at 10:30 am this year.

We ask that your daughter come to school in her #1 uniform. The Royal Canadian Legion, Fairbanks Branch #75 has provided us with poppies and poppy stickers for every girl in the Junior School to wear at the service. Please help us to help them by sending in a donation of a loonie or toonie to show our appreciation. The Poppy Campaign is one of the Legion's most important programs. The money raised from donations provides direct assistance for Veterans in financial distress, as well as funding for medical appliances and research, home services, care facilities and numerous other valuable and needed services.

NEW AND RETURNING FACULTY MEMBERS
Ms. Linda Moore
There's a new face in the Junior School! It is my pleasure to announce that Ms. Linda Moore has accepted the Grade 6 Math and Science teaching position, effective immediately. Ms. Moore will be providing maternity leave coverage for Ms. Britney Coleman for the remainder of this school year. Grade 6 parents are invited to meet Ms. Moore on Monday, November 7 at 3:30-4:00 pm, and/or Tuesday, November 8 at 7:45-8:15 am, and 3:30-4:00 pm in room 213.
Ms. Cheryl MacKinnon
I am pleased to announce that on Monday, November 7, Ms. Cheryl MacKinnon returns to Havergal College after the completion of her maternity leave. She joins her colleague, Ms. Ashley Fawcett to work together in our Junior School Learning Support Department.

Message From the Head of Junior School: October 27, 2016

Dear Parents,

As I write this the hallways and classrooms are full of moms and dads here for Parent/Teacher Conferences. We received a lot of feedback about the online appointment booking site, PickATime and understand that some of you were frustrated by your experience with this site. The school subscribes to this professional service with the goal of simplifying matters for you and, in this case, the opposite may have occurred to you. Our team has met to discuss how we can improve this experience from the parent perspective. We are in the midst of reviewing the online booking process in both the Junior and Upper Schools with the goal of alleviating the 'surge' of parent bookings that can occur when too many people try to access the same system at once. We are also in the process of getting answers from PickATime about what went wrong from a technological and coding perspective. In the meantime, I apologize for any upset and aggravation caused and thank you for your patience and understanding while we endeavour to resolve this issue going forward.

Warmly,
Leslie Anne Dexter

HALLOWEEN IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL
JS students will celebrate Halloween on Monday, October 31. Students should come to school in grub (non-uniform) clothing during the day, and bring their costumes to change into after lunch. This year, our Halloween Committee has worked hard to make sure that the girls have a 'spooktacular' time. Each class will participate in door decorating, a dance party, Halloween crafts, a costume contest, and conclude the school day together in a fun Halloween assembly. We ask that you do not send in any candies or sweets, as the school has arranged for all students to have a tasty treat.

Message From the Head of Junior School: October 21, 2016

Dear Parents,

This morning in Prayers we reflected on our Open House which we hosted in the Junior School yesterday morning. We welcomed prospective families to our campus who came to see our building, our classrooms, our teachers and to find out who we are. We were more than ready for them! As you walk down our corridors you will be astounded by student artwork, photographs and written work on every wall, in all grade levels. It was our student ambassadors who stole the show though! Our Grade 6 Ambassadors were amazing tour guides, they practiced diligently beforehand, and represented the Junior School with confidence and maturity as they dealt with both routine and difficult questions. I am so very proud of all of them!

Warmly,
Leslie Anne Dexter

HALLOWEEN IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL
JS students will celebrate Halloween on Monday, October 31. Students should come to school in grub (non-uniform) clothing during the day, and bring their costumes to change into after lunch. This year, our Halloween Committee has worked hard to make sure that the girls have a spooktacular time. Each class will participate in door decorating, a dance party, Halloween crafts, a costume contest, and even attend an assembly. We ask that you do not send in any candies or sweets, as the school has arranged for all students to have a tasty treat.
