Message from Head of Junior School - May, 12, 2017

Dear JS Parents,

This week the Junior School celebrated The Arts with the Kindergarten and Primary Spring Concerts. Yesterday evening the Junior students hosted the Arts' Carousel. This morning we had many special visitors throughout the school as it was Grandpals' Day. What an amazing week! Thank you to all faculty, staff and parents who helped to make this week such an incredible success.

JS Kindergarten Spring Concert and Art Gallery

• On Friday May 5^th, the Junior and Senior Kindergarten girls spoke, sang, and stomped to illuminate the message “Growing Up."  Empowering messages were shared through the performance of the songs "Yes, I Can!", "Everyone Is Special", "Touch The Sky", and "How Far I’ll Go". The girls cheerily participated in French songs as well. Each student shared their future career ambitions through video, and even performed a live reading of Robert Munsch's "Love You Forever".. 

Primary Art Concert

• The grades 1, 2 and 3 students sang and performed French Plays.  The celebration was fun and our girls proudly hosted their families on a tour of their learning through the halls of the Junior School.

JS Art Carousel

• Junior Arts Night is an evening that celebrates the drama, visual art, music, dance, literary arts and media arts that happens across the curriculum. The evening focused on the important process of learning and creation that goes into the final products that are presented. Parents, students and guests enjoyed the travelling experience through spaces of performance and presentations around the school.

STUDENTS TO WEAR HOUSE COLOURS ALL DAY

• ·  Rehearsals are underway and the competition is building as Havergal students prepare to show their House pride and spirit at the annual House Shout!
• ·  At 2 pm, the competition starts to heat up. The whole school meets on Ratcliffe Field where our Junior School students will kick off House Shout 2017 with a delightful medley of cheers. Next, the Upper School Houses will present their cheers to the school and a panel of judges. The House points earned at House Shout will go toward the overall House standing, which will help determine the winner of the House Banner—a Havergal tradition established more than 70 years ago.
• · Parents are welcome to join us for this special event. For those who cannot attend, you can join us live via Twitter or re-live the fun through photos and videos on our Facebook page or our news page.

GRADE 6 HOODIES

• For our current Grade 5 students, who are going into Grade 6 next year, we are delighted to offer a special hooded sweatshirt commemorating your daughter’s final year in the Junior School. Order forms due by: Friday, May 19th. The girls will be fitted for the hoodies on Friday, May 26th, and they will receive them in September.

DROP-IN SIT TIMES

• For the remainder of the year weekly Wednesday morning SIT drop-in time will be moved to Tuesdays at lunch. 

IVY PUB EVENING 

• The HCPA Special Events Committee would love your help in making the Staff Appreciation Event a success!This annual event, called 'Ivy Pub Evening', is next Tuesday, May 16th. On this late afternoon, we honor the entire school's faculty and staff at Havergal who interact with the girls on a daily basis.Parents can participate by donating time, preparing culinary treats (like appetizers, mains, cookies, cakes, loaves, fruit, etc.) or making a monetary donation in the envelope at the Upper School Security Desk.We'd love your participation in making this afternoon special and memorable!Please contact Loree: loreemeneguzzi@gmail.com with any questions.

Dear JS Parents,

Today the Havergal Junior School welcomed special guest; Jonathan Crow, Concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra to our morning Prayers. Thank you to our Music Teachers for arranging Mr. Crow's visit. This event was the kickoff to our Arts' Week. Please see details below.
Congratulations to the JK and SK students and our Kiddie Team for their concert ('Growing Up') this afternoon. The girls performed with gusto and a real sense of confidence. Bravo!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: ARTS CAROUSEL

• On Tuesday, May 9th, Rosa Mastri will require a number of parent volunteers to come in to the JS for a couple of hours each, to set up easels, frames and display the girls artwork.  If you are able to volunteer, please email our Volunteer Coordinator Niamh Stewart at duncstew@yahoo.co.uk and let her know when you are able to help on May 9th.

DROP-IN SIT TIMES

• For the remainder of the year weekly Wednesday morning SIT drop-in time will be moved to Tuesdays at lunch. Students should eat their lunch at their normal times, and then they are welcome to come to the Hub to work on their projects, share ideas and stay curious!

CRESCENT SCHOOL SCIENCE OLYMPICS 

• Last Saturday, we sent 3 students from each of grades 4, 5 and 6 to the annual Crescent School Science Olympics invitational.  The morning was filled with fun science demonstrations as well as hands-on science challenges for each of the grades.  Activities ranged from laser light mazes, to egg drops, human body quizzes, electricity and other science challenges.  For a final activity, the students were split into cooperative groups with members from other schools and our girls stood out as leaders in cooperation and communication as they helped their new team members solve additional challenges.  All our girls shone on Saturday and the grade 5 students did particularly well, placing 2nd overall.  Congratulations to Olivia K., Audrey G., Kaitlyn D., Kasey K., Emily, Z., Allison C., Claire R., Emma G., and Sarah H.

After her performance your daughter will be guiding you through the school during this event. Each student will participate in a musical performance, a French Play and tour their family on a gallery walk, explaining their work from over the course of the year.

Grade 5 Parents:  Please note that the Grade 5 Arts Carousel runs 6:45PM-7:45PM. Students will begin their evening with a musical performance in our Junior School Gym. We ask that your daughter arrive at the Junior Kindergarten Classroom for 6:30PM. They will meet their core teachers in this space. • The Havergal College Parent Association (HCPA) is looking for someone with some creative flair and strong written communication skills to join the dynamic HCPA team! Are you the right candidate? 
• This position is predominantly working from your computer to create very short written communication pieces and events that may be included in Mrs. Dexter's Friday Blog.  You will also work as a team with an Upper School Communications Convenor to prepare short written monthly pieces for Inside Havergal or the Torch Magazine.  You may be writing 4-5 short pieces throughout the year and attend a monthly HCPA meeting.  No experience required other than strong writing skills and willingness to join an exciting team!  Interested candidates please contact Robyn Spector, HCPA Chair, spector@rogers.com.

Message From the Head of the Junior School - April 28, 2017

Dear JS Parents,

What a truly A Maze-ing Race it was!  Thank you to Kevin Daley and his extraordinary team of volunteers for the FUN, COLLABORATIVE and EXCITING, HOUSE EVENT! Congratulations to all of the teams for working together so well, and for showing your HC spirit.  All girls that have an A Maze-ing Race t-shirt, are invited to wear it during Phys- Ed Class for the remainder of the year.  

On Wednesday, Dana Rippon and Michelle Lalonde, our Grade Rep Co-Convenors, will chair the second to last Grade Rep Meeting of the year.  As you know, anyone who wishes is always invited to attend. At the meeting, Ms. White and I will be speaking about all of the events taking place from now until the end of the year.  Look for your Grade Reps' email for details.  On behalf of the community, we thank Dana, Michelle and all of our Grade Reps for all they contribute to our school community.

ONTARIO NUMERACY ASSESSMENT PACKAGE (ONAP) TUESDAY, MAY 2,  for GRADES 3 - 6 (8:25 a.m.- 9:25a.m.)

• The Ontario Numeracy Assessment Package (ONAP) is an assessment tool we use to measure student success in certain math strands.  The ONAP test is done once in the fall and once again in the spring.  Teachers use this information to plan appropriate mathematics instruction based on the strengths and weaknesses of each class. 
• Students in Grades 3 - 6 will be completing the ONAP on Tuesday, May 2 from 8:25 a.m. and 9:25 a.m. Please ensure your daughter is on time so that we can begin promptly at 8:25 a.m.

• The parent surveys (links below) will be open through Monday, May 1^st. We are hoping to hear from as many Havergal families as possible as the responses will be used to inform initiatives as we make plans for the future of the school.

GET YOUR CREATIVE JUICES FLOWING!

• The Havergal College Parent Association (HCPA) is looking for someone with some creative flair and strong written communication skills to join the dynamic HCPA team! Are you the right candidate? 
• This position is predominantly working from your computer to create very short written communication pieces and events that may be included in Mrs. Dexter's Friday Blog.  You will also work as a team with an Upper School Communications Convenor to prepare short written monthly pieces for Inside Havergal or the Torch Magazine.  You may be writing 4-5 short pieces throughout the year and attend a monthly HCPA meeting.  No experience required other than strong writing skills and willingness to join an exciting team!  Interested candidates please contact Robyn Spector, HCPA Chair, spector@rogers.com.  

WE NEED YOUR HELP: JS STAFF APPRECIATION

• We are looking forward to the JS Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day next Thursday! We would like to thank all those who have signed up to bring food and flowers, and to volunteer their time to help during the day. We still need food and flower donations so anything you can do is greatly appreciated.

• FOOD: We still need donations for lunch appetizers, main and side dishes (gluten-free options are welcome). If you would like to donate, please email Sarah D’Souza at sarahmdsouza@gmail.com or sign up (http://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0f45aea82ca02-jsstaff). On May 4^th, volunteers will be collecting your breakfast and cold items between 8:00-8:30 am when you drop-off your daughter. Please bring your warm lunch items to the Staff Room at 11:00 am. We will be able to warm up some items if needed.

• FLOWERS: Please bring your flowers to the Lunch Room on May 4^th during morning drop-off or have your daughters bring them in for you. Buckets will also be set up in the JS foyer on Wednesday, May 3^rd at 3:30 PM if you would like to drop-off your flowers the day before. If you are preparing floral arrangements, please wear rubber-soled shoes and bring your shears and gloves.
