HCPA "HAVERGAL LAZY PANTS - SPIRIT WEAR" FUNDRAISER

The Havergal College Parent Association (HCPA) is very excited to announce their new fundraising initiative in partnership with Lazy Pant sweatpants! Proceeds will help fund various parent events and contribute to the school's fundraising initiatives.The Lazy Pants are in the classic grey colour with white gulls on the front and white 'Havergal' lettering running down one leg. Lazy Pants are available in both adult and children's sizes. Order forms will be accepted until October 3, with delivery expected in 3-4 months.

CELEBRATION SATURDAY - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1
Celebration Saturday brings together the entire school community for activities, games and opportunities to build connections with, and support for, our community partners in the city and beyond. This is a unique event as students, faculty, staff, parents, Old Girls, friends and neighbours of the school come together while developing a sense of our community spirit and an awareness of others in the greater community. Through the House system, students organize and carry out various activities. A fun part of this event that you won't want to miss out on is our silent and live auctions, which this year include:

HAVERGAL WELCOME COMMITTEE

Needed: New and returning members for the Havergal Welcome Committee! The Junior School Welcome Committee is a group of parents who work with the Admission Office to give tours to prospective families. Members are also involved in admission events such as Open House and our New Family Picnic. This is a great way to meet new people and share your love of Havergal with families who are going through the admission process. TERRY FOX RUN - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7 AT 2:00 PM
ASPIRE. INSPIRE.

Havergal College Junior School is thrilled to be hosting its 10th Annual Terry Fox Event on Friday, October 7 at 2:00 pm, rain date to be determined. All funds raised through our event will be forwarded to the Terry Fox Foundation to further the cause of cancer research. As in previous years, our run/walk will follow a course through the grounds of Havergal. The course is approximately one kilometer in length and students will be encouraged to complete the course as many times s they wish during the thirty-minute event. Please help your daughter remember to have her running shoes, water bottle, and gym uniform or Terry Fox t-shirt at school on Friday, October 7. The event will start at 2:00 pm. Teachers, volunteers and students will be on hand to supervise and assist students along with way. If you would like to volunteer please contact Tatiana Bidiak at tbidiak@havergal.on.ca

All students are encouraged to take part in fundraising. A pledge sheet will be handed out to your daughters on Monday. Donations can also be made to your school by going to:

New this year!

New this year! You will have the opportunity to buy this 2016 Terry Fox blue t-shirt with this year's design. Sample size t-shirts will be on display in front of the learning hub to assist you in choosing the right size. Should you choose to order a t-shirt, please complete the form you will receive on Monday and return it to the JS office with your cash or cheque payable to, "The Terry Fox Foundation". These forms are due by Friday, September 23.

Last year our school raised $16,700 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Since 2006, we have raised a total of $252,240! Congratulations HC! We are so very proud of all of you, and look forward to your support.

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to the 2016-2017 school year! I am so delighted to see everyone back refreshed and ready to be at school. Thank you to the many families who came out to support our second annual Back to School BBQ. The BBQ was a wonderful way to gather as a community and spend valuable time together. A special shout-out to the JS Grade Reps who were instrumental in making the get together so successful. Our Food Services Director - Rauni Whiteley said, "We couldn't do it without your help! Your time and efforts were greatly appreciated!"

JS DISMISSAL - PERMISSION TO WALK HOME
If you want your daughter to leave the school and walk home or take public transit by herself on a regular basis, we must have written permission. We must also have written permission if your child takes a school bus that you have arranged through an outside vendor. Understandably, on occasion there are special circumstances whereby you may not be able to collect your daughter and, on short notice, you would like for her to walk home. In these one-off situations, your daughter is required to sign-out in the Main Office before leaving campus.

A MESSAGE FROM SEONAID DAVIS, VICE PRINCIPAL - TEACHING & LEARNING - USING DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENTS IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL
Assessment and Evaluation are two sides of the same coin, measuring student learning. Assessment is measuring student learning in order to improve it; evaluation is measuring student learning in order to make a judgment about what a student knows, understands and can do at set points in time on particular tasks. Diagnostic assessment is designed to help answer the first of three critical questions teachers ask themselves:

• Where are my students now?
• Where do they need to be?
• How are they going to get there?

In the Junior School, teachers use a variety of diagnostic assessment tools to measure where student skills and abilities are at particular points in the year. For example, in the core classroom, teachers use the following diagnostic assessments:

• BAS: Benchmark Assessment System (Reading)
• ONAP: Ontario Numeracy Assessment Package (Math)
• School Wide Writing Assignment
• WTW: Words Their Way (Spelling)

The results of these assessment inform practice by providing valuable information about what each child knows and can do in the areas of literacy and numeracy at different points in the year. The results of this testing allows teachers to tailor their instruction to what students need to learn in the different areas.

The school uses the results of these assessments to measure student growth during a grade level and across grade levels, and to measure the impact of instructional strategies. The results of the diagnostic assessments alone do not determine the report card grade for a student and the results do not form any part of the official record for a student.

In the coming weeks, your daughter's teachers will be conducting a variety of diagnostic assessments with her. There is no special preparation she needs to do, other than a good night's sleep and healthy breakfast. Parent Teacher conferences in October will be an opportunity for your daughter's teachers to share with you their assessment of her achievement and progress based on a variety of assessment tools and opportunities.

Online sign-ups for athletics are now open for girls in the Junior Division as follows:

• Grade 5 - Cross Country, Swim, Basketball, Soccer Teams
• Grade 6 - Cross Country, Swim, Basketball, Soccer Teams

Your daughters have been shown in class how and where to sign up. For your convenience, please refer to the following link to see where on your Parent Portal home page, you will find the sign up link:

Students in Grades 5&6 can participate in either the Cross Country Team or the Swim Team. Students in Grades 1-6 are encouraged to come to Cross Country practice on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7:30-8:00 am. Our first practice is Wednesday, September 14 at 7:30 am. While girls in grades 4-6 are asked to sign up online, girls in grades 1-3 should sign in with the coach upon arrival. The school year is almost over. As we go into our final few days of school next week there's still much to know. Both days are very full, so I would like to offer the information below to keep us all on track.

GRADE SIX CELEBRATION
Student Dress: Grade Six only - #1 uniform

On Monday, June 13 we recognize our leaving Grade 6 girls at a special Grade Six Celebration at 4:00-5:30 pm in the JS gymnasium. Grade Six girls are asked to wear their #1 uniform to school as this is a formal occasion.


JS CLOSING CEREMONY - TUESDAY, JUNE 14 at 11:00-12:30 pm
Student Dress: Grades JK-6 - #1 Concert Dress

The 2015-2016 school year officially wraps up at the conclusion of our Closing Ceremony in the Brenda Robson Hall in the Upper School on Tuesday, June 14. This is a formal occasion, so it is important to note the following:

• Student dress: Grades JK-6 dress in #1 Concert Attire, consisting of #1 uniform with a long sleeved white blouse, and special attention to her hair. Hair should be pinned back from the face using a small hair accessory without colour or embellishment, hairbands, barrettes/pins should be small, plain and minimalistic.
• Dismissal is from the Junior School at the conclusion of the ceremony, at approximately 12:30 pm.
• No lunch at school! Please ensure that your daughter brings a nourishing/filling snack to sustain her throughout the morning.
• A light refreshment will be offered at the Junior School (labyrinth area) following the ceremony.
• No Gator Care available.

OHIP / STUDENT INFO UPDATES NEEDED
Parents, now is a great time to take a look at all the information in your family's portal. Most importantly, please ensure that we have your daughter's most up-to-date and accurate OHIP number on record in the event of an emergency.


MANSFIELD OUTDOOR EDUCATION CENTRE
Attention: Current Grade 3 & 4 Parents

On Wednesday, September 7, girls in grades 4 and 5 (2016-17 school year) will travel to Mansfield Outdoor Education Centre to spend a day participating in group bonding exercises and fun team-building activities. This past Wednesday a permission form was sent home in both hard copy, and an electronic version was emailed to you for your convenience. We ask that these forms be signed and returned to the Junior School office as soon as possible.
 

SUMMER READING PHOTO CHALLENGE
This year, one of our school-wide goals was to ensure that each of our students read more every day. As a result, we have seen many students strengthen their reading habits and improve their overall literacy development. Besides being a wonderful way to spend her time, continued reading over the summer will help your daughter be well prepared for school in September. For inspiration and encouragement while they are away, we are having a reading photo challenge! We are asking the girls to send in pictures of themselves reading over the course of the summer. Submissions will be posted on various social media platforms and will be included in a photo collage for the entire community to enjoy when we return to school in the fall. Each submission will also get your daughter entered into a draw for fun and exciting prizes.

A MESSAGE FROM LIBRARIAN ERICA RODD & SUMMER READING LIST
It has been a wonderful reading year in the Learning Hub! With the Forest of Reading Book Club, an author visit from Sarah Mlynowski, the Mabel's Fables Book Fair, and thousands of books borrowed and read, we have discovered new favourite authors, and grown our learning on a variety of subjects. Our Book Drive for the Children's Book Bank was also a huge success, with over 1,500 book donated by our HC community. This year I had a wonderful group of parent volunteers who dedicated hours of their time to help keep the Learning Hub organized and operating smoothly. Thank you very much to: Bahar Salivar, Kara Brodribb, Vicky Hu, Cathy Sturdee, Laura Gillis, Lesley Chisholm, Jade Wu, Catriona Prole, Sophia Yi and Leeye Lam.

GREEN AND GOLD SHOP
The G&G Shop at the Junior School is now officially closed for the school year, but the Green and Gold Shop at the Upper School will remain open until Friday, June 17 at 4:00 pm. They then close to restock and will re-open on Tuesday, August 2. Their hours at that time will be:

FINAL CALL FOR LOST & FOUND ITEMS

As we near the end of the 2015-2016 school year, there is a lot of information to be aware of and this blog is full of need-to-know details. I encourage you to make sure that you read it from beginning to end.

JS CLOSING CEREMONY
The 2015-2016 school year officially wraps up at the conclusion of our Closing Ceremony in the Brenda Robson Hall in the Upper School on Tuesday, June 14. This is a formal occasion, so it is important to note the following:

• Student dress: Grades JK-6 dress in #1 Concert Attire, consisting of #1 uniform with a long sleeved white blouse, and special attention to her hair. Hair should be pinned back from the face using a small hair accessory without colour or embellishment, hairbands, barrettes/pins should be small, plain and minimalistic.
• Dismissal is from the Junior School at the conclusion of the ceremony, at approximately 12:30 pm.
• No lunch at school! Please ensure that your daughter brings a nourishing/filling snack to sustain her throughout the morning.
• A light refreshment, consisting of cake and lemonade will be offered at the Junior School (labyrinth area) following the ceremony.
• No Gator Care available.

SUMMER READING PHOTO CHALLENGE
This year, one of our school-wide goals was to ensure that each of our students read more every day. As a result, we have seen many students strengthen their reading habits and improve their overall literacy development. Besides being a wonderful way to spend her time, continued reading over the summer will help your daughter be well prepared for school in September. For inspiration and encouragement while they are away, we are having a reading photo challenge! We are asking the girls to send in pictures of themselves reading over the course of the summer. Submissions will be posted on various social media platforms and will be included in a photo collage for the entire community to enjoy when we return to school in the fall. Each submission will also get your daughter entered into a draw for fun and exciting prizes.

Also, parents please mark your calendars to remember that on Monday, June 13 we recognize our leaving Grade 6 girls at a special Grade Six Celebration at 4:00-5:30 pm. Grade Six girls are asked to wear their #1 uniform to school as this is a formal occasion.
 

RECAPPING: FOREST OF READING PRAYERS
This past Monday, Grade 5 students Isabel Griffin-Sobotik, Sarah Hunt and Taylor Neldner presented the Forest of Reading Prayers. Forest of Reading is a Canada-wide, multi-levelled reading incentive program where students read Canadian books and vote for their favourites. While our youngest students enjoyed sharing the ten picture book nominees, students from grades 4 to 6 read from a list of ten nominated novels. Sixty two of our students read five or more of the novels, making them eligible to vote for their favourite. In the end, Canada agreed with Havergal and chose the same top three books as we did in our school vote! Congratulations to everyone who participated, took chances with new books and stayed committed to the challenge.

Last call to get your HC shopping done!

LOCKER/CUBBY/DESK CLEAN OUT
It's time to think of summer clean up! On Friday, June 10 your daughter is asked to bring all personal items home - please help her by sending in a large bag to tote her belongings in. Lost and found items will be arranged on tables outside the gym at this time, so please don't forget to take a look to see if your daughter's uniform pieces, lunch bags, water bottles or anything else that she may be missing. Dear Parents,

Isaac Newton once said, "We build too many walls but not enough bridges." Of course, at Havergal College we have a bridge, and our Grade Six leaving girls are headed over to the other side to start the next chapter of their HC academic career. It was only a few years ago that we started the tradition of recognizing our girls at a luncheon served literally on the bridge that connects the Junior School to the Upper School. Luckily Mother Nature was on our side as it was nothing but sunshine and warm breezes for us today. Please join me in congratulating our Grade Six girls!

RETIRING FACULTY MEMBER
Mrs. Dayfoot is hanging up her ballet slippers, stowing away her character skirt and retiring from teaching. She has introduced this classical art form, along with many other dance genres to countless young girls over her many years in the Junior School. She is a passionate and inspirational educator who generously shares her vast knowledge and love of the arts, performance dance, choreography, staging, and physical fitness with professionalism and grace. She leaves us to spend more time with her husband Tim, and to visit her children, Sophia and Andrew in Alberta more often. Please join us in wishing Mrs. Dayfoot much happiness in her retirement.


UPDATE: FORT McMURRAY RELIEF DAY - BLUE 'GRUB' DRESS

The school is awash in blue today - to remind us of the many victims of this devastating natural disaster in our own country. If your daughter forgot to bring in a donation today, there is a very bright orange collection box on the counter in the main office until Monday, May 30 (until lunch). All funds collected by this time will be matched by both the federal and Alberta provincial governments to help people in dire need. Please help us to make a difference.

Message From the Head of Junior School: May 20, 2016

Dear Parents,
 
It's been an exciting and eventful week from performances in Prayers to book festivals. Some highlights include:

• Monday - Strings performance of Star Wars, playing with their cool light saber bows.
• Tuesday - In the morning, our amazing prefects from the Upper School came and practiced our Junior School cheer with us for House Shout. Then, in the afternoon, we kicked off House Shout with our spectacular cheer. Next, we all turned on our spirit to support our Houses while the Upper School performed their cheers.
• Wednesday - The highlight on this day was the Forest of Reading Book Festival. Everyone from grades 4 to 6 who read five or more of this year's book nominees travelled downtown to the Waterfront to participate in a celebration and the unveiling of the 2106 Silver Birch book winner. The winner was Gordon Korman as he received the most votes from the readers.
• Thursday - The day started off in Prayers with music and dance performances. Everyone gave it their all and created a great show. The grade 1 students left early in the morning to learn about bees at a bee farm and I hope no one got stung! And...

I got to be Head of the Junior School for a day. It was so much fun, especially when we asked some SK students about what they thought would be the worst part about being a principal. Some answers included: (1) sitting around all day and doing nothing, (2) having to sometimes miss Prayers, (3) doing work, (4) being strict. Some of my favourite things included writing this blog post, creating a list of changes for the Junior School with Dr. Simmonds (see letter below), getting my swipe card, and sitting in the big chair greeting everyone in the morning. Now that I've had this experience, I'm ready for anything!

Dear Parents,

Isn't Anna amazing! As you may know, one of the most popular auction items at Celebration Saturday is being the Head of the Junior School for a day. On Thursday, this office was represented by Grade 6L student, Anna Zufferli and I couldn't be more proud of her. She was kept busy throughout the day with meetings at both the Junior and Upper Schools, co-taught in JK & SK and HPE, recess duty, tours and took the time to write the above blog opening for me. I was so amused by the letter she and Dr. Simmonds drafted, I felt compelled to share it with you. I think you will agree with me that she has some interesting suggestions, especially Sleep-in Mondays! Please visit our Facebook page to see how much fun Anna had.

SIT ANNOUNCEMENT -  FORT McMURRAY RELIEF DAY - BLUE 'GRUB' DRESS

Havergal College is joining forces with the Canadian government to raise money to support relief efforts for the many victims of one of the worst natural disasters Canadians have ever faced. All funds raised will be matched by both the federal and Alberta provincial governments. Our girls in SIT want to help .... on Friday, May 27, all JS students are encouraged to bring $2 (toonie) and show they care by wearing blue 'grub', non-uniform clothing to school. As a whole school, HC has  raised over $2,300 so far. Your support is much needed, and very appreciated!

GRANDCHILDREN'S PARTY - WEDNESDAY, MAY 25 AT 3:30-5:30 PM
All Old Girls and current parents are welcome to join us to celebrate more than 100 years of tradition! The Havergal Grandchildren's Party was started in 1910 by first Principal Ellen Knox for Old Girls and their descendants. The event is an opportunity for all Old Girls, parents, their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren (girls and boys) to visit the school for an afternoon of exciting games, music, pony rides, critters, treats and more.
