Message from Head of Junior School - November 24, 2017

Dear JS Parents,

A couple of weeks ago, the Grade Six classes were told that the Junior school was looking for something meaningful to do at Christmas time. Something where EVERY single student would be involved in making a positive difference in the lives of others during the holiday season. They were told that if they had a passion to do something for the holiday season, they could come forward with a proposal and see if they could make it happen, So that’s exactly what they did, and started researching organizations that needed assistance. The students found many wonderful organizations and decided on one called the Red Door Family Shelter. The shelter provides services for over 500 families and individuals a year who need safe, emergency shelter. It provides services such as 24-hour emergency housing, medical assistance, child care, counseling, education, life skills training, a weekly food bank, and clothing, toiletries and household items.

The students contacted the shelter to see what items would be of particular use at this time of year. After hearing what the needs were, the Grade 6s are now asking that we come together as a community to collect toiletry items, NEW winter clothing accessories, and other items for the Red Door Family Shelter.  These items will then be put together as care packages for boys and girls between the ages of 6 to 16.

Each class will be responsible for specific items in order to ensure that we have enough of everything to put together as many care boxes as possible. You should have received a letter yesterday outlining the items your class is responsible to bring. In case you did not receive this letter, the class items are shown on the chart at the link below:

Christmas Giving By Class

A special thank you to Ms. Carayannis for her support of the students in this initiative.

Thank you in advance for your contributions to this wonderful organization! Let’s make this a holiday to remember for everyone!

Warmly,

Kate White

ENRICHING GIRLS' MATH (ISSUE 3, NO.3 - 112717)
Leveraging Productive Struggle for Learning
  • Student struggles with learning mathematics are often viewed as a problem and are cast in a negative light (Hiebert and Wearne, 2003; Borasi, 1996). Teachers, parents, educators and policymakers routinely look for ways to overcome this perceived ‘‘problem,’’ by regarding it as a learning difficulty and attempt to remove the cause of the struggle through diagnosis and remediation (Adams and Hamm,2008; Borasi, 1996). Through this lens, students’ struggles in learning mathematics are not viewed as meaningful learning opportunities.  In contrast, there is an alternative perspective on students’ struggles for learning mathematics. The struggle itself forces a learner to make sense of something that is beyond her current level of understanding.

Message from Head of Junior School - November 17, 2017

    Dear JS Parents,

This month in prayers we have been focusing on courage as a character trait.  As part of this, we have identified that courage can often only be shown in the face of fear. Today, our students in Grades 4 - 6 went to see the movie "Wonder" based on the novel by RJ Palacio. It tells the story of a ten year old boy named Auggie Pullman, who was born with a facial deformity, and is often on the receiving end of unkind behaviour, and curious stares.  His decision to go to school with his peers, rather than be homeschooled requires him to be show courage and to persevere.

Students in Grade 1 - 3 remained at school, and spoke about how difficult it can be to show bravery.  Rev. Douglas shared a book called "Stand Up For Yourself: The Kids' Book of Courage" by Anders Hanson.  In it, the author identifies some of the ways that we can show courage every day.  For example: getting a shot at the doctor, when we know it may hurt a little, but will keep us healthy; trying new things when we don't know what to expect; asking for help; telling the truth, performing in front of others; and sharing your feelings.

On Monday, we will be talking about some of the ways that we have seen Havergal Junior School girls show courage, and challenge ourselves to continue being brave.

    Warmly,
    Kate White

    JUNIOR SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
During the mid-term break, Havergal staff and the Buttcon construction team were continuing work on campus. Click here to see a list of work completed to date at the Junior School.
While we have several permits in place, we are still awaiting a key permit from the City of Toronto, which is required in order for us to proceed with the next phase of the project. In the meantime, we are carrying out work that is necessary to complete in order to move forward with our development. From fine-tuning elements in the Kindergarten classrooms, to setting up construction entrances and zones, some of the work taking place is more visible than other efforts happening behind the scenes.
We ask that you please keep safety in mind by using designated driveways and pathways rather than alternate routes, as well as abiding by construction signage to avoid entering any construction zones.
As always, we appreciate your patience and support as we work to bring our vision to life!

Enriching Girls' Math - Mathematical Growth Mindsets for Learning
