Message from Head of Junior School - October 20, 2017

Dear JS Parents,

The Junior School hosted its annual Open House yesterday.  The hallways were buzzing with prospective families throughout the day, many of whom asked us "Why should we choose to send our daughter to Havergal?"  I loved hearing the wide variety of answers that came from this simple question.

"Havergal is a school with many traditions, but it is not a traditional school."

"My daughter feels known here.  I know that her teachers truly care about her, and want the very best for her."

"As an old girl, I really value the friendships I established when I came here.  My closest friends are still the ones I made when I was at Havergal."

"At Havergal, you don't have to choose to be 'sporty' or 'academic' or 'artsy,' you can explore all of these things."

"My daughter wakes up every day and really wants to go to school.  It doesn't get much better than that."

A sincere thank you to our amazing Admissions team, parent volunteers, teachers, Upper School students and our Grade 6 tour guides for helping us to showcase the Junior School so well.

Warmly,
Kate White

ENRICHING GIRLS' MATH - HELPING YOUR CHILD LOVE AND LEARN MATHEMATICS
It is well reported that parents’ and family members’ attitudes toward learning mathematics has a significant impact on their childs’ attitudes towards mathematics. In fact, students whose parents and family members show an interest in and enthusiasm for mathematics application around the home will be more likely to develop that enthusiasm themselves and persevere to learn and succeed in learning mathematics.

HEAD LICE
Pediculosis (head lice) is  not  a  health  hazard, but is  a frustrating social  nuisance.
We know that the presence of head lice is unrelated  to  cleanliness and is
most common in children between 3 and 12 years of age.
Contrary to popular belief, school is a rare source of transmission of lice, as shown in multiple  studies.  Transmission is much more common from family members, sleepover guests and playmates who spend large amounts of time with your children.  The identification and treatment of head lice is ultimately the parents’ responsibility; however, communication and education about head lice with  students and parents is  essential for fostering a relationship of trust and respect in dealing with the issue.
Please check your childrens’ heads on a regular basis for any evidence of head lice.  By informing the school of new cases you allow us an opportunity to remind families to be vigilant in checking their children when we know pediculosis is present in our community.

ASK AN EXPERT - RAISE AWARENESS OF DEMENTIA
In order to raise awareness of dementia, five high school students from Havergal College are building off their work in 2016 and will continue to visit residents in a dementia care home on a weekly basis. During their weekly interactions, the students will engage in conversation and brain-stimulating activities with the residents, under the supervision of Professor Herrmann and the staff at the dementia care home. Dr. Herrmann is the Richard Lewar Chair in Geriatric Psychiatry.  The students have just posted their first dementia blog post for this year: http://dementiaawarenessprogram.blogspot.ca

The weekly blog this year is going to be alternating between "Ask the Expert" columns and posts about the latest news in dementia research. For "Ask the Expert", they're opening it up so that anyone in the entire Havergal community can send in a question about dementia (via the comments section on the blog) for Dr. Herrmann to answer. If there are any questions you would like to see answered on our blog for "Ask the Expert", please contact Mr. Nichols at gnichols@havergal.on.ca
