Message from Head of Junior School - June 2, 2017

Dear JS Parents,

We had another action packed week at the Havergal Junior School!  This week, on Monday and Tuesday, girls in grades 3,4,5 and 6 learned how to make `Pets de soeurs` -in French! We welcomed Chef à L’école Suzanne Warner to the Junior School with her fun and educational program to provide a unique hands-on experience in French.

On Thursday, June 1st the JK students celebrated their success in the annual giving campaign with a picnic on the Cohen Field.  The girls enjoyed blowing bubbles, playing games and eating cookies in the sunshine with their Grade 5 Haverpals.

Also on Thursday, Cricket Canada came to Havergal Junior School Phys Ed classes to teach the girls the fundamentals of one of the biggest sports in the world.

Finally, today we celebrated the much anticipated Gator Day! With activities from "I Spy Scavenger Hunt" to a Group Yoga Session, to relay races, a wonderful time was had by all. Stay tuned to see which house won the House Cup this year!

Wishing everyone a fantastic weekend!

Warmly,
Leslie Anne Dexter

JS USED BOOKS COLLECTION & SALE
Junior School families can now participate in the Used Books Collection and Sale, also known as the "Upper School Used Textbook Collection and Sale".  This consignment sale is through the Canadian School Book Exchange (CSBE) where parents can drop off their books at Havergal for the CSBE to sell over the summer.  The best part is that not only will you receive a cheque when your books sell, but Havergal will also receive some of the proceeds of the sale!  This is a great opportunity to declutter while recycling your gently used books.  In past years, this amazing sale has raised between $22,000 to $30,000 with proceeds going to the Havergal College Parent Association, funding many of our parent engagement initiatives and also supporting the Limitless Campaign.  It's one of our biggest fundraisers!  Please bring in any gently used books and help us reach our goals.

Used Book Collection:
Here are the 3 easy steps to take when consigning your books with the Canadian School Book Exchange (CSBE):
1)   If you are an Upper School family and have previously participated in this before, check your email as CSBE will be sending you a barcode if you had placed an order with them this 2016-2017 school year.  (Junior School families who have not done this before, Don’t worry… if you do not have a barcode, CSBE will create one for you on the day you arrive)
2)   Bring your barcode (if you have one) and all of your books to the collection day
3)   A CSBE representative at the collection will provide you with stickers to attach to the back of your books
Location:
Legacy Theatre
Dates/Times:
Wednesday, June 14 (11:30am – 1:30pm)
Thursday, June 15 (7:30am – 1:00pm)
Bring:
ALL BOOKS (School and non-school related)

Please note:
CSBE will accept ANY books (in good condition and that have not been written in) you wish to sell on consignment. Bring in all of your school and non-school related books to sell, including children's books, novels, coffee table books, university books etc... If there is a market to sell them, CSBE will do so!
Havergal will not be accepting any books at the school after these dates but you can still either arrange shipping direct to CSBE or wait until CSBE is back at Havergal in October. We will keep you posted on the date.

Junior School textbooks belong to Havergal Junior School and should be returned to the classroom teacher at the end of the year.  Those textbooks in Junior School should not be taken to this collection and sale.

Used Book Sale
Once the CSBE has your books, they will sell them over the summer on consignment in an efficient and fair manner. As your books sell, the CSBE will send your payment directly to you. The CSBE will also take back books that have been on the curriculum within the last five years, even if they are not on Havergal’s curriculum the next year. Please note that net proceeds from the used textbook sales support Havergal, which directly benefits all students.
Please contact merve-karahan@hotmail.com with any questions.

    Friday 26 May 2017

Message from Head of Junior School - May 26, 2017

    Dear JS Parents,

Summer break is just around the corner, only 12 more school days left in this school year!

This week we had plenty to celebrate in Havergal athletics!
On Tuesday, May 23, our girls headed to York University for their Track and Field Championships. It was a beautiful sunny day, and all of the participants did extremely well! We had many girls participating in the finals, and the Championship results will be posted soon!

On Wednesday, the Green and Gold softball teams traveled to The Country Day School to play in the championship tournament. Both teams put together all of their learning from over the course of the season to play their very best. At the plate, our hitters were poised and swung the bat with such ferocity that it left their coaches in awe. In the field, gloves were catching balls left, right, and center. In the end, neither team made it to the championship game, but they had a fun time playing against each other in the consolation championship game! Havergal Junior School softball is alive and well. A huge congratulations goes out to the teams for practicing hard all season and making tremendous progress as softball players.

    Great job girls!

    Warmly,
    Leslie Anne Dexter

    Please Note:

On Thursday, June 1st, the JK girls will spend the lunch hour on the Cohen Field enjoying a picnic with their Grade 5 Haverpals. The girls will eat lunch together, enjoy a tasty Havergal dessert, and have the opportunity to chat and play games after lunch. Please cross your fingers for a warm, sunny afternoon!

The afternoon includes our 10 House teams playing against each other in a variety of fun and physical activities, such as relay races. Friday 19 May 2017

Message from Head of Junior School - May 19, 2017

      Dear JS Parents,

Spring has finally sprung!  What a full and exciting week it has been!

On Tuesday, May 16, Havergal celebrated one of the most anticipated events of the school year: House Shout! The girls looked INCREDIBLE all dressed up in their house colours. Their signing voices could be heard miles away! We were lucky that the rain held off long enough for us to get together on Ratcliffe Field to hear the lively and creative cheers from each of our 10 Houses. When the cheering was over, students enjoyed popsicles in the South Quad. Thank you everyone for coming out and showing such amazing school spirit!!

Also this week, on Wednesday, 75 students from grades 5 and 6 attended the Festival of Trees at the Toronto Harbourfront Centre. This event is the culmination of a months-long reading journey. Earlier this month, students read, shared, and discussed ten nominated titles and then voted for their favourite. The Festival was a day-long event, and students met authors, attended workshops, and witnessed the awards ceremony, where the winners of the program were revealed. It was a fun ending to our most successful Forest of Reading year ever! Congratulations girls!

This morning we joined together as a Junior School Community to talk about the importance of Mental Health.  The purpose was to bring about awareness of mental health and talk about how we keep our minds healthy. We have been discussing the importance of being able to experience a wide variety of emotions, and the strategies needed to manage them effectively. To learn more about Mental Health Day, ask your daughter about the following:
      • Our walk through the Lisa Hardie Trail this morning
      • The Graffiti Wall in the front hall
      • Meditation after Recess
      • Lunchtime Yoga
      • JK/SK:  The Emotions' Collage
      • Grade 1 & 2 - Their "Feelings' Pie"
      • Grade 3 - Mental Health Centres
      • Grade 4 -6 - Guest Speaker, Dr. Tripler Pell  http://www.triplerpell.com/

On behalf of everyone at the Junior School, we wish you all a wonderful and restful long weekend.

      Warmly,
      Leslie Anne Dexter

      Please Note:
